Your vision plays a vital role in your everyday life , from driving and reading to working on screens and spending time with family. Yet many people only book an eye test when something feels "wrong.”
As an optometrist in Durban North, one of the most common questions I receive is:
“How often should I get my eyes checked?”
The answer depends on your age, health, and lifestyle.
For Adults (Ages 18–60)
Most adults should have a comprehensive eye test every 1 to 2 years, even if their vision feels fine.
Regular eye examinations help detect changes in prescription, early signs of glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetes-related eye changes.
Early detection allows for early treatment and better long-term vision health.
For Children
Children should have their first full eye examination before starting school and then every year thereafter.
Vision problems can affect reading ability, concentration, confidence, and academic performance.
If your child squints, sits very close to screens, complains of headaches, or struggles in school, an eye test is highly recommended.
For Seniors (60+)
Adults over 60 should have their eyes checked annually.
With age, the risk of glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration increases.
If You Have Medical Conditions
